Of all the colors in nature, none is more prevalent on Earth than blue. Blue is the depths of our oceans, the heights of our skies. It’s a mesmerizing, tropical sea and the breathtaking grandeur of an Arctic glacier. Blue is the light of innocence in a baby’s eyes, the brooding darkness of midnight despair. Around us, enveloping us are the many magnificent moods of blue.
This season we are introduced to a new blue: a Palace Blue that bursts forth between the electric blue of Sound and Vision and the regal hue of Her Majesty’s personal flag. This is not a shy blue, but one that is bold, pure and direct. It commands – it demands – our attention.
This new shade is so strong that many designers are applying it in modest amounts to accessories. Of course, these bursts of color from the palatial palette are destined to become the center of focus regardless of what else is being worn. Bold, blue belts to cinch your style. Bright blue bags that grab attention. Sky-high heels that stand for fashion. These are the essential elements of spring 2009.
Some runways are featuring Palace Blue in exquisite gowns of feminine, flowing fabrics. These ethereal goddess styles are reminiscent of the fluid fashions of Ancient Greece, a civilization surrounded by sea and sky, and deeply immersed in philosophy.
It is little wonder that this single civilization is most associated with the color blue. Blue represents depth of feeling in humans. It is passive, sensitive, perceptive, and unifying. Psychologists attribute to it the affective aspects of tranquility, contentment, tenderness… and love and affection. The ancient Greeks left a legacy of intellectual accomplishment that could only be achieved in an environment in which thought and ideas were regarded as more powerful, and more admirable forces than brute strength. This is the power of blue.
Our current fascination with this particular shade indicates a return to more intellectual and spiritual pursuits. This is a color that is energetic and enervating, celebrating internal and eternal -- rather than physical and fleeting -- excitement.
In spring 2009, we are hoping for a better future. We are seeking renewed strength, greater honor, increased optimism. We are abandoning chaos in favor of stability and structure. We are turning away from shallow frivolities and searching for deeper meaning. We are looking for blue skies ahead. We find them in the regal majesty of Palace Blue.
