 Debbie Bliss |
Welcome to the September issue of Spotlight. This month we feature one of the most respected names in the knitting industry, Debbie Bliss. Best known for her British-inspired classic patterns, Debbie has expanded her portfolio to include an extensive array of quality yarns that are loved by knitters throughout the world. From her soft Baby Cashmerino that caresses with 12% cashmere to her rustic Donegal Tweed Aran that's made in Kilcar, Ireland of 100% wool, Debbie has created a selection of yarns that are perfectly suited to her vast collection of patterns.
Debbie added the yarns a few years ago, and after one manufacturer rejected her idea, she approached a new distributor in the UK that also wanted to distribute Noro yarns. Fortunately for her — and for us — she found a company that understood and appreciated her vision and gave her the opportunity to develop a line of products that has become a favorite amongst discerning knitters. Debbie says that having her own line of yarns gives her the freedom to create her own fibers and color palettes, and enables her to develop more designs.
As you will know by her many books of patterns, Debbie is fiercely proud of her British heritage, and often uses traditional stitches in her designs. She particularly loves the fisherman's ganseys, aran and Fair Isle stitches that have been passed down from generation to generation. It's the tradition that appeals to this lover of British history.
Debbie says that although her home and her heart are in Britain, her career got a boost in the United States because there was particular interest in British designers. Her success in North America motivated her to keep going, and today she has a library of successful pattern books and enthusiastic fans throughout the world.
This autumn, her new books Glen and Folk Chic present an exciting collection of designs that draw on traditional patterns and styles to create modern, trendy designs any knitter would be proud to create.
Yarnmarket is proud to be a stockist of Debbie Bliss yarns, carrying every yarn and pattern book she produces. We hope you enjoy learning more about the beautiful Debbie Bliss line...and don't forget to enter our contest to win over $150 in Debbie Bliss products.

 Debbie Bliss |
She could have been just another graphic designer — designing posters or packaging for clients in the corporate world. But after a year in art college she realized that her love of art and her passion for fashion and textiles would lead her into a far more promising, far more enriching career.
She wasn't a business person as much as she was a creator. So when she started out selling knitted flowers and plants to a British arts and crafts store, she had to supplement her income by working other jobs...in a hospital...a steel factory. Places you wouldn't imagine finding a young woman whose name would someday be synonymous with exquisite British knitted fashions.
Debbie's first big break occurred when Lesley Stanfied, the Knitting Editor of Woman magazine, started teaching her techniques to perfect her garments. Then armed with expert advice and a lot of encouragement, she started to develop hand-knitting patterns for other magazines. Before long, she was designing a line of ready-to-wear knitted clothes for Baby Gap and little boy's knitwear for Marks & Spencer, the UK department store chain.
While her patterns were successful, designing for hand-knits isn't a particularly lucrative career, and Debbie had a family to support. She opened her own shop, but kept at the designing, using her own label on other manufacturers' yarns. Eventually she realized she could produce her own brand to her own exacting specifications — which meant that her baby and children's yarns were going to be something a little different.
Instead of the traditional pastel hues, she chose dusty colors. And she wanted brights like adults would wear. Most of all, she wanted good quality yarns and were both beautiful and practical.
Drawing on inspiration from her travels abroad and her home in a vibrant, multi-cultural part of the London urban landscape, Debbie creates patterns with energy and verve. She embraces color, movement and texture giving her garment designs a definitive Debbie Bliss style. Her thorough understanding of yarn, fibers and the attributes of various combinations enables her to develop patterns that effectively utilize the natural qualities of the materials. If a yarn has elasticity and drapes well, she'll develop a pattern design that accentuates the shaping and draping qualities. If she's using a cotton, for example, that provides excellent stitch definition she'll create a pattern that encompasses intricate stitch detail.
Today, as a successful designer and author, Debbie boasts over 30 books, most recent of which are the fabulous new Glen and Folk Chic for the 2010 Autumn fashion season. Additionally, Debbie produces a magnificent magazine twice annually...and she is always looking for new color treatments and fiber combinations for her expanding line of Debbie Bliss yarns.
With the help of her pattern compiler, Penny Hill, Debbie has built a strong and loyal following of knitters throughout the world who appreciate her concentration on classic but contemporary styles. She has become an icon to those who celebrate color, texture and the thrill of creating their own masterpiece in fiber. We hope you enjoy exploring the world of Debbie Bliss with all its beautiful yarns and designs.
